A case involving the disappearance of a young woman linked to the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI/PGI) has sparked allegations of religious conversion and abduction, drawing attention across Uttar Pradesh. The matter has gained prominence because it follows a similar controversy that had earlier emerged at King George’s Medical University (KGMU).

According to reports, the 21-year-old daughter of an SGPGI employee went missing on May 21 after leaving home for work-related purposes in Lucknow’s Telibagh area. Her family has alleged that a man identified as Irshad Ali lured her, pressured her into religious conversion, and may have taken her away. The family has also raised concerns about an alleged Syria connection and has sought a thorough investigation by the authorities.

The victim’s father has claimed that the accused was known to the family and had frequent access to their home. He further alleged that the accused blackmailed the young woman using objectionable photographs and videos and pressured her to convert her religion. The family has also questioned the role of a doctor allegedly associated with PGI, though these allegations have not been officially confirmed. Police officials have stated that all claims are being investigated and that evidence is being examined before any conclusions are drawn.

The case has generated significant public attention because it comes shortly after allegations of forced religious conversion surfaced at KGMU. In that earlier controversy, a resident doctor was accused by female colleagues of harassment, exploitation, and pressuring them to convert their religion. The allegations led to administrative action and police investigations.

In response to the growing concerns, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel has reportedly directed medical and dental colleges across the state to establish special monitoring and awareness cells aimed at preventing such incidents. Educational institutions have also been asked to conduct awareness programs and strengthen communication with students and staff.

Meanwhile, law-enforcement agencies continue to investigate the PGI case. Authorities have emphasized that all allegations, including those related to conversion and international links, will be verified through evidence-based inquiry. The family of the missing woman has appealed for her safe return, while officials have assured that every aspect of the case is under examination.
